Carcinoma of the thyroid: retrotracheal extension of the tumour.
This lateral view of the neck shows massive soft tissue swelling with marked anterior displacement of the trachea which is compressed in its anterioposterior diameter. The displacement is due to gross retrotracheal extension of the thyroid and is indicative of malignancy. This patient had an anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid.
